The Crazy Things I See In A Day

Yesterday was one of those days where you see the craziest things!

First A and I dropped by Smyth to pick up the jar we had engraved for our friend's house-warming gift. Not only did we wait in the wrong line for 5 minutes, which can actually seem like an hour when you have a squirming toddler desperately trying to escape your grasp; but when we got in the correct line we had another 3 minutes to wait.  As I lost the fight and let A down to walk around, scooping  her up again when she got more than 5 feet from me, I glance to my right. Up at the counter is another mom, struggling with her 3 year old who thinks swinging from the velvet ropes that blocked off the line is more fun than staying up late. As I scoop A up again and relocate her back in front of me, I look over again at the little girl who is now trying to climb up the counter where her mom is being helped. Apparently the mom didn't think swinging from the ropes was a great idea.

When the little girl can't make it up over the counter she starts crying and wiggling on the floor. Granted I am pretty new to the whole temper tantrum business, but I would say it was a pretty weak attempt. Anyway, the mom is clearly loosing patients, and sits her daughter down at her feet, where she is still crying but no more wiggling. Then the most absurd thing happens...the lady who is being helped next to the mom at the counter, reaching into the candy bowl, pulls out a lollypop and hands it to the little girl! WHAT! Who does that!?!? Once the mom picked her jaw up from the floor, she managed to remove the lollypop from her daughter's hand and thrust it back to the lady with nothing more than a fake smile. I had to turn around at this point to keep from laughing out loud, but I did make a mental note to remember this situation in case some random person ever tries to give A  candy. Good job, mystery mom!

As if that wasn't enough, when I was heading into work last night (I teach grad school), our security guard was biking around the parking lot, like always patrolling the area. Normally I just give him a wave on my way into the building, but tonight I literally stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the contraption he had created. First of all, these guards have to wear helmets when they are biking...you know, setting a good example for the students. But he had somehow rigged his helmet strap with some string and what looked like duck tape, and made a little pocket for his cell, and was chatting away as he leisurely biked around the lot. Oh no, Mr. Security guard was not spending money on a silly Bluetooth, I mean why bother when you can rig up something that creative. Snaps for the security guard....wish I was a faster thinker and took a picture...Ellen would love that (and yes, I am talking about Ellen DeGeneres, hey cut me some slack, I am a stay at home mom). Maybe I can stalk him down next week and get a picture :)

Mucinex In...Mucux Out!

You know that feeling when you wake up and you know something is wrong. Well, it happened to me this morning. I woke up from my NightQuil induced coma, and looked over at the clock. Crap! It was 8am...and I hadn't heard the baby yet. Now, she consistently gets up between 7:02-7:14 every single morning, so everything goes rushing through my brain. Did I go get her in my drug induced state and put her in bed with me? I check under the covers and nothing. Not that I have ever done that before but who knows that these drugs will do to your mind! Did my dog suddenly turn into Carl (you know the book) and get A up and changed and fed? Nope, Preston is asleep on the floor. Did my husband not go to work this morning and secretly has A playing quietly downstairs? I launch out of bed, still a bit wobbly and head downstairs. There is my beautiful baby girl, sitting in her highchair, covered in cream cheese and a huge grin. I breath a sign of relief and give A an air kiss before trying to focus my eyes on my husband who is over by the sink, hunched over, looking a putrid shade of green. "I just wanted you to sleep in a bit, do you feel better?" he asks in between dry heaves. Yikes! As I command him to go back to bed....great, I am spreading my germs...and say a silent prayer A has not been contaminated by either of us, it dawns on me how sweet he was being this morning. As a spoon whizzes by my head I am quickly brought back to reality.

Okay, let's assess the situation. The down side...I still feel pretty crappy, and now have a sick husband, too. On the bright side... A looks healthy and has played and had breakfast! I pull her out of her chair and into the family room we go to play, while I make a quick cup of tea. After about 20 minutes, A is ready for her morning nap! Yes! I give her another air kiss and put her in her crib, then run to the office to contact my doctor. Of course my doctor is out today (really?!?) so I am contacted with the on-call doctor who recommends mucinex and fluids. Great, I think to myself, this is not going to go well.

When A wakes up we reluctantly head to Rite Aid to get the mucinex and then onto the vet with Preston. What can I say, she needed her nails clipped and I knew the fish tank in the office would entertain A better than I could at that time.

By the time we get home, I slug down a mucinex and get lunch going. A is being so good today...like she knows we don't feel well, she eats her lunch quickly and neatly and is actually excited when we head upstairs for a nap, yelling, "night-night" the whole way up the stairs.

As my head hits the pillow about 30 seconds after I closed A's door I hope for a miracle...and I get one! I am not saying I feel great, but I would say good! I can't believe this stuff. If they didn't already have that big green mucus family representing the product, I would call the company and become the official spokesperson!

So, the day turned out well, and I only have 6 more hours till I can take my next two magic mucus pills!

Do Stay At Home Mom's Get Sick Days?

So I am sick. I don't get sick often, but when I do my body wants to make sure it really gets its money's worth. It started with a sore throat, then went to nasal congestion, then a full on sinus headache, and now I am sneezing, coughing, and pretty unattractive.

But in all honesty, who cares! It is not like my husband is going to stay home from his job (the one actually paying the bills) so I can do what...stay in bed, but secretly listen to all the fun they are having and (no offense, honey if you are reading this) but everything he is doing differently, you know, just "not like mommy does it". No, I am certainly not. As I mentioned before, I have the patience of a mother in a candy store, and the attention span of a 7 month old. Not a super great combination for sitting around all day and not involving myself in the family workings.

So, although I never thought I would say this, I am hoping for a rainy day so my plan for tomorrow doesn't seem to weird and out of the normal. First we will start with a big breakfast of homemade French toast. I even bought challah bread today at the grocery store...thinking ahead! Then when A is really full, I will put her down for her morning nap. If I can get her just full enough, she will avoid the massive blowout and take a 1 1/2 morning nap. Here's hoping :) At that time, I also will take a morning siesta. No need to shower, I don't plan of venturing too far into the public eye. After our morning nap, we will play in our very safe playroom, where I will put the gate up before laying on the floor for our new game of "try and wake mommy". When this gets old, I plan on pulling out all stops and reading some books to A in bed. Always a hit for at least 30 minutes. Then it will be on to lunch and my all time favorite, afternoon nap. Yep, I will be in the room next door napping, if A should need me! Around 3:30 A will wake up and we will have a snack. You read correctly, I did say we. Then I will take her for a walk around our yard, since she will need some fresh air. But remember, not too far since I haven't seen the shower, or probably even a brush, yet. After our walk, she will want to play some more with her favorite kitchen in our family room, as I can again sit on the floor and play defense against any bodily harm. If everything goes as planned about 30 minutes after we enter the playroom, Daddy should walk through the door, for a pass off.

After, I plan on popping some more cold meds and regrouping before dinner, bath and bed time.

Wish me luck!
